अपने साढ़े तीन दशक लंबे करियर में 500 से अधिक फिल्मों के साथ, अनुपम खेर देश में सबसे अधिक फिल्में करने वाले एक्टर बन गए हैं. हालांकि, एक्टर के लिए उनकी अब तक की यह यात्रा आसान नहीं थी. 

बता दें कि अपने एक इंटरव्यू में अनुपम खेर ने कहा है, "मैं जब 9 वीं कक्षा में था तब मैंने एक प्ले में काम किया था. मैं तब एक लाइन भी अच्छे से नहीं बोल पाता था, इसलिए मेरी लाइन्स किसी और को दे दी गयी थीं. लेकिन प्ले के समय वो अपनी कुछ लाइन भूल गया और तब मैंने अपनी टूटी-फूटी इंग्लिश में कुछ कहा और तब ऑडियंस में सभी हंसने लगे."

अनुपम को मंच पर रहना पसंद था और वह अभिनय में अपना करियर बनाना चाहते थे. इस बारे में उन्होंने कहा, "मैंने चंडीगढ़ में एक्टिंग कोर्स के लिए मैंने एक विज्ञापन देखा और ऑडिशन के लिए 100 रुपये की आवश्यकता थी. मैंने इसे अपनी मां से चुराया और बताया कि मैं पिकनिक के लिए जा रहा हूं. शुक्र है, मुझे स्वीकार कर लिया गया! इसलिए मैं अभिनय का अध्ययन करने के लिए चंडीगढ़ गया. मुंबई ड्रामा स्कूल नौकरी पर रख रहा है, यह विज्ञापन देखने से पहले मैं 2 साल तक शिक्षक था."

“When I was young, I asked my grandfather why we were so happy despite being poor. He said, ‘Happiness is our cheapest luxury’. My dad was very optimistic–when I ranked 59 out of 60 in school, he said I could always do better next time! It was this celebration of failures that made me unstoppable. I got my calling when I acted in a play in 9th grade. I couldn't say my lines well, so they were given to someone else. But during the play, he forgot to say them! So I made something up in my broken English–the audience was in splits! I loved being on stage & wanted to act full time. I saw an Ad for a course in Chandigarh & needed Rs.100 for the audition. I stole it from my mom & told her I was going for a picnic. Thankfully, I was accepted! So I went to Chandigarh to study acting. I was a teacher for 2 years, before I saw an ad that a drama school in Mumbai was hiring. When I got here, I realised they had no money–they gave me a small space to teach & a tiny room to stay. I didn’t want to go back a failure. So I taught there, while auditioning & performing in plays. It was hard–at one point I had no work, money or help. I had to live on beaches & sleep on platforms. I didn’t want to worry my parents, so I wrote to my granddad that I wanted to come back. But he replied, ‘A man who’s already drenched in water, shouldn’t be scared of rains’–I didn’t give up! It’s good that I didn't, because soon, I got a role in a Mahesh Bhatt film. I got money & a place to stay. But later, I was told I was replaced. I called Mahesh Bhatt & he said it was true. I couldn’t take it & decided to go home. But first, I met Mahesh Bhatt & told him no one would play the part better than me–he was making a mistake. So he told the producers he wouldn’t make the film without me–he saw the vigour with which I wanted to act. That’s how I got my first film. Today I’ve done over 500 films. It’s been a bumpy ride, but everyday, I thank my failures for bringing me this far. I thank all the people who said no to me, all the people who didn’t help me–because if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t have pushed myself to get where I am today…a place where my dreams, are now my reality.”

मुंबई शिफ्ट होने के बाद अनुपम खेर ने महसूस किया कि उन लोगो के पास पैसे नहीं हैं. उन्होंने मुझे पढ़ाने के लिए एक छोटी सी जगह दी और रहने के लिए एक छोटा कमरा. मैं असफलता से पीछे नहीं हटना चाहता था. इसलिए मैंने वहां पढ़ाया, जबकि ऑडिशन और नाटकों में भी काम किया. यह मुश्किल था - एक वक्त ऐसा भी था जब मेरे पास कोई काम, पैसा या मदद नहीं थी. मुझे समुद्र तटों पर रहना पड़ा और प्लेटफार्मों पर सोना पड़ा था.

एक पल ऐसा भी आया था जब अनुपम ने लगभग हार मान ली थी और वह घर लौट आए, लेकिन उनके दादा ने उन्हें याद दिलाया कि "एक आदमी जो पहले से ही पानी में भीग रहा है, उसे बारिश से डरना नहीं चाहिए." उनकी दृढ़ता की वजह से ही उन्हें महेश भट्ट की 'सरनांश' से इंडस्ट्री में अपना ब्रेक मिला.
